Addiction Counselling in Penetanguishene

What is Addiction/
Substance Use Therapy and How Can it Help?

Our approach to substance use and addiction begins with a fulsome assessment of where you are at. There is no judgement here, we understand that you have tried and tried to manage your use of substances and it has been difficult.

Many approaches focus on the substance use as the problem however, we view substance use as a symptom of underlying issues such as: anxiety, depression, unresolved trauma, and low self worth, to name a few.

In order to manage substance use, we must address the root cause by working to support and help your emotional and/or physical pain. When we can do this, the need for substance use is greatly reduced and behavioural changes that you make will be more effective.

Substance use can cause a myriad of health issues, so our treatment recommendations at our Penetanguishene clinic may include collaboration with other services such as your physician or specialized addiction services to ensure your well-being.

***If you require urgent care for addictions or substance use please go to your nearest emergency department or call 911 ***

ABOUT US

Why Work with Huronia Mind Health and Trauma Clinic

You don’t need to filter yourself here. This is a safe space.

Being trapped in cycles of self-doubt and feeling disconnected from yourself and others can be exhausting. When you’re caught up in your head instead of living your life, weighed down by an inner critic that tells you you’re not enough, it can feel overwhelming. But you don’t have to face these struggles alone.

We understand because we’ve been there too. Everyone faces challenges—ourselves included. We believe in getting support when needed and know how hard it can be to show up as your authentic self.

With decades of experience working with individuals, couples, and families, we offer a compassionate space where you’re truly seen and accepted. Our approach focuses on what happened to you—not what’s wrong with you. Your symptoms aren’t who you are—they guide us to the healing you need.

Together, we’ll help you move from surviving to living, developing deeper connections with yourself and others while finding more peace in your daily life.

Let’s begin your journey to peace, joy and ease.

Addiction Therapy FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Therapy

We really understand this. Many times, we try methods to manage substance use that fail because life and stress happens and our old coping strategies kick in. The fact is, you did not fail, the method did.

When the underlying pain is healed, the methods can be more effective.

There are programs that are covered by OHIP such as the RAAM (Rapid Access to Addiction Medication) Clinic. RAAM can be very helpful if you require medical assistance and you can access RAAM Clinics across Ontario. If you are local, please visit this link to get more information about the RAAM Clinic in Midland: https://www.rvh.on.ca/areas-of-care/mental-health-and-addictions/

Other clinics available across Ontario.

OHIP does not cover therapy at our clinic however, our therapists are all registered clinicians who are covered by extended health benefits such as employer benefits. Check with your insurance company to see  what coverage you have.

Our Penetanguishene therapy office is a calm, supportive space. Your therapist will help ease you into the process, starting with topics you’re comfortable discussing. You set the pace. Sessions typically begin with exploring what brings you to therapy, your goals, and any concerns. We understand that opening up takes time and trust.

Therapy helps many people improve their mental health, manage emotions, develop coping strategies, and enhance relationships. Its effectiveness depends on factors like the client-therapist relationship and individual commitment. Initial sessions often focus on immediate concerns before exploring deeper issues.

No one will know you are in treatment for substance use unless you tell them.

Confidentiality is guaranteed for all clients however, there are some limitations to this:

  • If your therapist is concerned that you are at risk of self harm (or of harming someone else) they may have to talk to someone to keep you, or the other person, safe.
  • If there is a concern about the welfare of a child, your therapist has a duty to report this by law, to authorities.
  • If you report/or a therapist suspects abuse of a vulnerable person such as the elderly, they have a duty to report.
  • If a therapist receives a court order to provide information, they may be obligated to do so.
  • If there is reported professional misconduct by another health professional there is a duty to report.
  • If there are allegations made against the therapist, their regulating body may review records in order to investigate the allegations.

Many people feel initial relief once they find a therapist they trust. Acute issues may show improvement within weeks or months, while deeper healing takes longer. Active engagement both in and between sessions increases effectiveness. Finding the right therapist fit is crucial for progress.
