Life asks so much of women today. Many are balancing work, caregiving, relationships, and various other roles — they often do this while carrying burdens that no one else sees. If you are a woman who also carries trauma, this balancing act can feel especially heavy. At Huronia Mind Health and Trauma Clinic, we meet many women like you —intelligent, capable, deeply caring —and absolutely exhausted. We want you to know you are not alone, and healing is possible. In the meantime, here are some mental health tips for busy women that we hope will offer some comfort:

You Don’t Have to “Fix” Yourself

Healing from trauma isn’t about trying harder or adding one more thing to your already full plate. It’s about creating space — even brief moments — where you can feel safe, supported, and connected. Grant yourself some time to be still. Measure success, not by checking tasks off your “to do” list, but by the number moments of kindness and grace you can give to yourself.

Your Needs Matter, Too

Women often put everyone else’s needs first. But who is looking after you? Self care is an act of self love, and benefits those you care for, because you cannot pour from an empty cup. Give yourself permission to rest and receive care, whatever that looks like. You will be better in all domains of your life, and you will feel better for you.

Trauma Can Hide in a Busy Life

Staying busy often feels necessary and it can help us avoid feelings and memories we’d rather not face. If you find yourself racing from one task to the next, or unable to feel present in your life, it may be a sign that you need attention and care. Remember: you can’t out run trauma; it will always catch up with you.

Small Moments Can Make a Big Impact

If a full hour of self-care feels impossible, start small. Here are a few things you can try, even on the busiest day:

Grounding:   Place your feet flat on the floor. Be sure to slow your breath, release tension in your body; allow your shoulders to drop, if it feels ok, close your eyes. Breathe deeply into your belly for the count of 4, pause, and breathing out to the count of 7. Repeat this until you feel more centred.

Be your own best friend:   When you notice self-criticism, gently say to yourself, “I am doing my best and it’s okay to rest.”

Reach out:   Send a short text or call a friend or loved one. It’s ok to take up space in the world; connection is healing.

You Deserve Support
